Lab Manager, Conformable Decoders

Position Overview:

The Conformable Decoders research group focuses on the fabrication of mechanically-adaptive micro-/nano- systems where all the activities are performed in the cleanroom facility. The lab manager will assist the principal investigator (PI) with the management of daily operations and work with research staff consisting of postdoctoral associates, graduate and undergraduate researchers, and technicians to support research activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the PI and lab administrative assistant to ensure lab safety and ensure the lab’s environmental health and safety compliance;
  • Ensure all lab members are fully trained in the cleanroom procedures and policies;
  • Manage interactions with the MIT’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) office to ensure compliance, work with EHS representatives on safety training of lab personnel;
  • Assign lab and office space;
  • Manage cleanroom check-in and check-out process;
  • Develop and manage protocols/manuals/schedule sheets for equipment within the cleanroom and train members accordingly;
  • Schedule general cleaning of the cleanroom;
  • Conduct weekly safety inspections and prepare the laboratory for biannual inspections;
  • Order and maintain lab inventory of chemical, electrical and general supplies;
  • Order and oversee installation of lab equipment, perform basic maintenance; and act as point of contact for service and maintenance of equipment, assess when to deactivate and remove equipment;
  • Manage and assist with lab catalog of commonly used protocols; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • A minimum of five years’ experience working with micro-fabrication techniques;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Working knowledge of EHS safety procedures and training;
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills;
  • Ability to work independently, also work well as part of a team, good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent writing skills; and
  • Experience with common lab protocols such as chemical etching, dry etching, insulator depositions, photolithography, generation of polymer templates, defining polymer molds, generation of lithography masks.

Preferred:

  • MSci or MEng or PhD degree in Chemical/Biological Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields;
  • Experience in lab management.
