In recent years many individuals and organizations have shifted there attention to the notion of "wellbeing" to address the growing rate in mental health issues including depression. A broader framework has included developing programs, tools, and technology to cater to physical, mental, emotional, and at times spiritual wellbeing. Should the conversation on wellbeing move to a broader platform so that it is not limited to its clinical applications? What should be the relationship, if any, between wellbeing and Eudaimonia or human flourishing?

From second skin to haute cuisine, how can we design responsive materials and interfaces, which couple sensing and actuation? How can we explore the reciprocal relationships between engineered material behaviors and final interface behaviors? Research in the context of this thesis contributes to the development of a few responsive material systems, with building blocks from both the world of the grown and the world of the made. Guidelines were generalized to integrate such materials with interaction design.
