We are interested in building new information technology based on the laws of quantum mechanics, using elementary building blocks of Nature: atoms and molecules. Such a quantum computer can solve certain problems, including searching and factoring, much faster than a classical computer can. Prototype machines with up to seven quantum bits have been demonstrated in our laboratory using magnetic resonance techniques.
