The Protel Environment is pretty straight forward to use. On the upper left is the Protel toolbar. It has icons for all of the tools and objects necessary to make pcb boards. The most important tools are tracks(wires), vias (connections between layers), pads, components, text, and planes. You will eventually want to use all of these items, but you can start with the basics. There are some basic view zoom functions. The most important is the magnify glass in a white box. This zooms the board to fit in the window.

The most important parts of any pcb layout are the components. The browser on the left side of the environment allows you to find out information about components as well as nets(the connections). It also allows you to browse different libraries of parts. The default parts library is ADVPCB.lib. The library contains the standard set of footprints for most components. You can download other libraries form www.protel.com. You can also make your own footprints of parts.
Most of the parts which you need should already have been placed in the PCB from the Schematic. However, you can add parts manually as well.
Try placing some parts now. Select a part from the Browse Libraries menu and click place. Click on the zoom to fit button. You should now see the part, the part's comment, and the part's designator. Zoom out a bit and try clicking and dragging the part. You should be able to move it around. While clicking press the Spacebar. You should see the part rotate. You can doubleclick on the part to bring up the information window. You can type in various things such as the designator and comment, as well as the position of the part. You can doubleclick on almost anything to change parameters about it. Before we start adding wires, it is important to check that the layers to which we want to add components are viewable. It is now time to customize the environment.
