  • a kitchen that knows enough to know you like your chardonnay cold... and your salsa hot
  • a pinch, a scoop, a cup or a quart without measuring a thing

Kitchen Sync is a project in the works. The brainchild of Joseph Kaye and Sandy Choi, Kitchen Sync is looking to be built this summer with the help of Raffi Krikorian.

Kitchen Sync is the kitchen of the future: a space where everything is connected, and where your fridge always knows what your oven is doing. The fridge, the counter, the microwave, the dishwasher - even the kitchen sink - all know their contents, their status, and can act on objects both physically and digitally.

Imagine you want to make a chocolate cake, and you want your kitchen to help. You tell your kitchen what you want to do, and it goes to work. The fridge and the cupboards check to see you've got all the ingredients. The oven starts preheating. You bring out the mixing bowl, and put it on the counter, and the kitchen gives you directions. "You'll want to add three cups of flour", says the kitchen. You start pouring the flour from the bag into the bowl. "One... two... a bit more.. that's it." There's no need to measure: the counter knows how much flour you've poured out. A video of Julia Child making the same recipe pops up - to lend a hand with the difficult bits. And once it's in the oven, there's no danger of burning with Kitchen Sync keeping and eye on things.

For most of us, calorie counting, and keeping track of what we eat, is a casual thing. For some - diabetics, for example - it's serious business. With Kitchen Sync, you can reach into the freezer, and take out a pint of Ben & Jerry's, and as you spoon it out, a display of the calories, the sugar, and the fat pops up on the wall in front of you - going up with every scoop.

Kitchen Sync is a whole made up of many parts. A coffee machine that remembers who you are, and how you like your coffee. A fridge that knows what it contains, can tell you without you having to open the door - but still functions as a message center, just as the one in your kitchen does now. Why shouldn't the voice of Robin Williams or the skills of Julia Child help you in your cooking? It's all possible with Kitchen Sync.
