A main goal of hardcopy research is development of adaptable technologies for a prototype holographic "laser printer", a device capable of generating holographic hardcopy of three-dimensional design and medical databases automatically. This includes development of hybrid imaging systems, experimentation with novel recording media, and research into unique display techniques.

Research on this topic is sponsored a consortium of Honda R&D Company, IBM, and NEC. Past sponsors include General Motors Corporation and DARPA.
