Q: What is the difference between the IBM Aglets release and the Open Source release?

A:Currently, the Open Source release is almost the same as IBM Aglets 1.1 beta3, except for non-existence of expiration. However, we expect that the Open Source community will develop ASDK further, so we encourage you to check for the newest version on Aglets.org!

Q:Which release is currently available for ASDK?

A:The latest IBM releases of ASDK are Version 1.0.3 and ASDK Version 1.1 Beta. The very latest Open Source version you can find on Aglets.org.

Top of General Questions

Q:What platforms is ASDK available on?

A:Aglets Software Development Kit requires you to have installed

JDK 1.1 or later: Aglets Software Development Kit with JDK 1.1 is qualified for
・SPARC/Solaris 2.5,
・x86/Solaris(1.1 beta 4)
・Windows95/NT, AIX 4.1.4
・OS/2(1.1.1 beta)
・Macintosh(MRJ SDK 2.0.1)

Since it is entirely written in Java, it should run on any platform that supports JDK 1.1.x. (Our installer does not support all the platforms on which JDK 1.1 is available. For example, you need manual installation for HP-UX.) The current ASDK does not work with JDK 1.2 beta, because JDK 1.2 beta is not fully compatible with JDK 1.1.x. We do not decide when we will provide ASDK which runs on JDK 1.2.

Q:How do I download ASDK? How do I install it?

A: Just follow this link - it's free!

Q:How can I get started with programming mobile agents in Java?

A:This is the quickest way:

1.See the Getting Started page.
2.Download ASDK and follow the installation instructions.
3.Visit some of the documentation pages of the aglets examples.
4.Take a look at our book on aglet programming.

Top of General Questions

Q:Do I need special server software to use aglets?

A:Yes, you will need to run the atp daemon (in the ASDK package) to receive incoming aglets over the network. More about this on the Getting Started page.

Top of General Questions

Q:Where can I find Jodax and Tazza, which are mentioned in the White Paper?

A:Sorry, Jodax and Tazza are no longer a part of ASDK or ASDK. Please use JDBC to access a database from Aglets. We will provide another solution to replace Tazza in the future.

Top of General Questions

Q:Where can I find Fiji?

A:Fiji is a program that runs on an http browser and provides an aglet context. Its development and distribution has been suspended.

Top of General Questions

Q:What will happen to my IBM ASDK when the expiry date is reached?

A:ASDK 1.0 does not expire.

ASDK 1.1 Beta checks the current date. It will not start if the expiry date has been reached.

Top of General Questions

Q:Are there any publicly available aglet servers running on the Internet?

A:Yes, we have the following sites:

atp://procyon.nal.ics.es.osaka-u.ac.jp:4434 in Japan

JDK 1.1.6, ASDK V1.03, Platform SGI O2 R10000, IRIX 6.3

If you find an aglet "examples.http.WebServerAglet" is running in this site, please take a look at the web page: http://procyon.ics.es.osaka-u.ac.jp:4434/aglets/default/te st/next.html Note for NT users: Many aglets can not return from these servers. When you use ASDK on the NT platform, the server cannot always acquire its network domain name. (It depends on the environment.) If the server fails to determain the domain name, please specify the "-domain yourhost.domain" option on starting up Tahiti(agletsd). (Otherwise your agent will not not be able to determain the domain of its home server.)

If you are running another server on the Internet, please let us know.

Q:When and how can I use the product version of ASDK?

A:ASDK Version 1.0 is an IBM product. The license agreement for ASDK Version 1.0 is, however, less restricted than that for the alpha version for the AWB. If you want more information than we have made public on our homepage, please contact aglets@yamato.ibm.co.jp.
