Job Description

The City Science group at the MIT Media Lab seeks a researcher to focus on the user-interface, user-experience, and computer graphics aspects of the CityScope platform. The researcher will also help coordinate the community engagement process for international deployments. CityScope is a next generation, tangible, augmented reality platform with three primary objectives:

  • Visualize and understand the meaning of complex urban data and inter-relationships
  • Simulate the impact of multiple urban interventions
  • Support decision making in a dynamic, iterative, evidence-based process

CityScope platforms are currently being deployed in Shanghai, Beijing, Helsinki, Hamburg, Cambridge, and Andorra. See:

This is a one year appointment with possibility of extension based on funding availability and the initiative’s priorities.


  • Develop interactive tools for CityScope users, with an emphasis on making complex and sophisticated simulation tools accessible to non-experts
  • Explore virtual environments, new human interface devices, and other software/hardware combinations that allow for communication in a collaborative setting
  • Develop the group’s online user-experience
  • Enable interaction between the team of developers via the collaborative tools
  • Develop and foster a crowd-sourced community forum which gathers information about various Changing Places projects deployed and currently developing around the world



  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban planning or other design discipline
  • At least 3 years of experience in related design fields
  • Capable of working in a dynamic, multicultural environment
  • Excellent teamwork and social skills.
  • Excellent design and computer graphic skills
  • Experience with Unity3D + Adobe CS
  • Software development skills: Object Oriented Programming such as Java, C++, JavaScript or equivalent
  • Experience with 3D modeling, GIS and other map-making tools
  • Ability to make independent judgments and strategic decisions


  • MA degree in design discipline
  • CAD and CAM
  • Rendering software (Rhino, Grasshopper, 3d Max)
