Job Description

The MIT Media Lab seeks a Financial Officer to be an integral part of a ten-person financial team.  This role is responsible for complex financial activity associated with the Media Lab’s research and consortium funding.  The Financial Officer will perform comprehensive financial work and advise and support a diverse community.  The successful candidate will be collegial and a quick learner.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a complex portfolio of research groups and initiatives, including federal awards, by providing monthly reporting, analysis, and advice;
  • Perform financial work, including analysis and strategic planning for research funding projections, personnel allocations, and other resource management issues;
  • Ensure all post-award transactions within the portfolio are completed within set timeframes. This includes sponsor reporting, subaward management, cost object maintenance, etc.;
  • Assist with preparation of research proposal submissions to industrial, foundation, and federal sponsors during peak periods;
  • Ensure financial compliance with Institute policies and procedures and applicable agency rules and regulations;
  • Manage financial processes including:

     o   Monitor delinquent travel expenditures/vouchers and swept credit card charges for the Lab;

    o   Maintain the Roles database for the Lab;

    o   Monitor payroll suspense accounts;

    o   Approve requests for RA travel allowances;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of related experience in accounting or finance;
  • Familiarity with federal awards and guidelines;
  • Collaborate with MIT central offices, including VPF, OSP, Audit, and RSO;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills;
  • Meticulous attention to detail;
  • Problem solving, time management, and analytical skills;
  • Ability to prioritize and work efficiently despite frequent interruptions;
  • Ability to take initiative to Implement and/or improve established financial processes;
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
  • Interpret, communicate, and apply policies and procedures.

PREFERRED:

  • Familiarity with MT’s financial procedures and practices;
  • Experience with SAP, Concur, BrioQuery, and MIT’s web-based financial systems.
