The Lab is supported by more than 80 members, including some of the world’s leading organizations. Our members provide the majority of the Lab’s approximately $75 million annual operating budget.

The Media Lab is looking for a dedicated, quick learner Senior Financial Officer who will assist in the leadership of a ten-person financial team.  The Senior Financial Officer is responsible for some of the most complex financial activity associated with Media Lab’s research and consortium funding.  Will perform high-level financial work, advise and support a diverse community.

Responsibilities

The Media Lab is looking for a Senior Financial Officer who is collegial and a quick learner to assist in the leadership of a ten-person financial team.  The Senior Financial Officer is responsible for complex financial activity associated with Media Lab’s research and consortium funding.  Will perform high-level financial work, advise and support a diverse community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the most complex portfolio of research groups and initiatives within the Lab;
  • Perform high-level financial work, including analyzing and strategically planning for research funding projections, personnel allocations, and other resource management issues;
  • Responsible for effective staff management for a group of employees, including training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment;
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Finance on financial activities that impact the overall financial health of the Lab. This may include special reporting, budgeting and financial planning, and other ad hoc projects;
  • Develop innovative solutions for enhanced performance of department operations;
  • Assist with preparation of research proposal submissions to industrial, foundation, and federal sponsors during peak periods; and
  • Ensure financial compliance with Institute policies and procedures and applicable agency rules and regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance, accounting, economics, or other related quantitative field (or equivalent experience);
  • Seven years of direct experience in financial management and analysis;
  • At least three years of experience supervising individuals and demonstrated ability to promote team-building, yet willing to carry own portfolio of work, separate from managerial tasks;
  • Must be highly competent using Excel with strong knowledge of financial functions, look-ups and pivot tables, as well as the ability to create well formatted analysis that is easy to understand and follows best practices including separating of variables from formulas, documentation of calculations, and use of named ranges;
  • Demonstrated ability to be a big-picture thinker, strategist, and long-term planner;
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work independently in managing multiple projects and priorities;
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills;
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and flexible approach to daily activities; and
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fluid environment, interacting with faculty and staff at all levels in a supportive environment.

PREFERRED:

  • Knowledge of standard federal regulations;
  • Knowledge of MIT business systems, including SAP, KC, Tableau, Cognos, B2P, and Concur.
