CrossTalk is a table-sized keyboard composed of alternating rows of maple and mahogany keys. Users can create messages which travel though a variety of media, exploring different methods of communicating and collaborating with words.

The first medium encountered is tactile. Two users standing at the table can simultaneously enter messages on the over-sized, interlaced keyboard, physically negotiating the shared space between them. As they type, they encounter the second shared medium, sound. Each key produces a different word sound, allowing the participants to collaberate in the creation of a conversational background texture.

Once a message is completed, it travels across a visual channel of small flashing lights. In this medium of transition, movement is highlighted. The text then alights upon a display screen, where each letter visually carries with it the shadow of a word; the same word that echoed aurally when the letter was pressed. As the message settles, these temporary words fade away and leave a colorful transcript of the conversation.
