Transforming data into knowledge

The Macro Connections group at The MIT Media Lab focuses on collective learning--that is, the learning that takes place at the scale of teams, organizations, cities, and nations. Research at the Macro Connections group focuses on  the study of collective learning and on the creation of tools that can facilitate the collective learning or organizations and nations.

The Macro Connections group was established in 2010, when professor César A. Hidalgo, joined the MIT Media lab. Since then, Macro Connections has pioneered the study of collective learning in economies--by developing the theory and empirics of economic complexity--and in our human collective memory--by developing the largest structured dataset on biographical records. The Macro Connections group has also excelled in the development of large data visualization engines, which are tools that algorithmically transform data into stories. The visualization engines authored or co-authored by the Macro Connections group include The Observatory of Economic Complexity, DataUSA, Immersion, DataViva, and Pantheon, among others.
