Welcome to MAS960, Special Topics in Media Technology: Principles of Electronic Music Controllers. This class explores historical and technological issues in electronic music controllers. It features weekly lectures, as-needed workshop sections, and a final project requirement. We focus on the devices that have pushed the technological boundaries of musical interaction, analyzing their physical affordances, their mappings from gesture to sound, and their use in performance.

We are supporting the low-cost Arduino physical computing platform, and the open-source Pure Data audio DSP and control software. Other toolkits that may be useful are referenced on our Links page, and students are welcome to use any of these as well. The links to the left lead to the various resources found on this site.
