WHAT:
Dr. Norimasa Kishi (Research Director, Nissan Research Center):
"E-Cockpit for the Information Age"

WHEN:
Thursday, April 15, 2004 from 2:00 PM EST

WHERE:
Bartos Theatre, MIT Media Lab (E15)

HOSTED BY:
Alex (Sandy) Pentland

SUMMARY:
The innovations of information technology—such as the Internet or cellular phones—bring various and rapid changes to our lives. We are now living in the information age. Nissan has been researching how vehicles can be connected within this information society, and how people can use such connected cars.

In this talk, Dr. Kishi will first go through an overview on the future evolutions of key devices, such as navigation systems, instrument meters, and indicators. Then a new concept, "ISHIN-DENSHIN E-Cockpit" (a quasi-telepathy communication E-cockpit), is described in terms of how it enables the driver to handle both vehicle and information operations peacefully.

BIO:
Dr. Norimasa Kishi joined Nissan Central Research Laboratory (currently, Nissan Research Center) in 1978. Since then, he has been researching automotive electronics. He has won several awards for his innovative research results, including the first voice-recognition system for automotive applications, the "Birdview" navigation system, and the AI-based interior layout design system.
