| Biography
Bruce Blumberg heads the Synthetic Characters group, focusing on building
computer systems that can robustly learn the kinds of things animals learn
easily, that behave with the everyday common sense that animals display, and
that evoke the feelings of companionship that animals such as dogs invoke in
us. He and his group have created many virtual characters capable of
independent decision-making, and these characters have been widely demonstrated
at conferences such as Siggraph, where he has also served as a lecturer on
artificial life for graphics, animation and virtual reality, and smarter
animated agents. Blumberg has also lectured at the Game Developers Conferences
in 2000 and 2001.
Blumberg received his doctorate in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT, studying
under Professor Pattie Maes. He came to the Media Lab from NeXT Inc., where he
was one of the original employees, and prior to NeXT was the product manager
for the original Apple LaserWriter. He has an MS from MIT's Sloan School of
Management and a BA from Amherst College.
