Job Description

 The Laboratory for Social Machines (LSM) based at the MIT Media Lab seeks to understand and design human networks through the creation of new digital technologies with applications in pro-social media and learning. LSM is seeking a software engineer in support of LSM’s mission.

Responsibilities

The lab is seeking a Research Software Engineer to undertake software development, data-management, and data-analysis projects in support of LSM’s mission. The successful candidate will:

  • Independently design and develop methods, and build core software systems.
  • Serve as lead for multi member projects. Mentor researchers and junior engineers in industry best practices and production level software development methods.
  • Participate in and lead effective product-engineering development practices. Direct and guide workflows to ensure effective continuous deployment of research.
  • Effectively work in a fast pace, uncertain environment, pivoting as research and social needs develop.
  • Productionize, maintain, and troubleshoot software in support of projects.

Supervision Received:

Reports to Prof. Deb Roy under general supervision.

Supervision Exercised:

None

This is appointment is for one year with possibility of extension based on course of research and funding

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • At least one year experience delivering production software systems in an industry setting, including experience with Python, JavaScript, and SQL; React+Redux experience preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a project plan, and to execute with minimal oversight.

PREFERRED:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related area
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms;
  • Experience working in a small startup environment
  • Familiarity with common machine-learning methods and/or data visualization techniques.
