Description

Professor at the MIT Media Lab, joint Professor at the MIT Department of Biological Engineering and the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Investigator and Associate Member of the MIT Picower Institute. He is currently leading the Synthetic Neurobiology Group at MIT. The Group focuses on the invention of new tools for analyzing and engineering brain circuits. Their inventions include the development of “optogenetic” tools for the activation and silencing of neural circuits with light. Their vision is to reveal how entire neural circuits operate to generate behavior, to empower new therapeutic strategies for neurological and psychiatric disorders, and to yield a better understanding of the nature of human cognition. The work is highly suggestive in offering new pedagogical perspectives (how we learn).
