When doing research its imperative to do a healthy amount of meta-analysis, As I began exploring the future of creative coding and graphics programming, I started with something we interact with constantly but rarely think about critically: Integrated Development Environments (IDEs).
IDEs are the software tools we use to create software. They function like sophisticated text editors that go far beyond basic writing, they allow you to write code, execute it, integrate third-party applications, and increasingly, incorporate AI assistance. Despite being our primary interface for programming, IDEs are often overlooked in discussions about the future of coding.
I've been conducting research on IDEs and their relationship with creative coders. Specifically, I've led two workshops exploring how creative programmers perceive their relationship with the IDEs they use. During these sessions, I gathered diverse perspectives on how creative coders currently interact with their development environments and how they envision these tools could better support their creative process in the future.
