Former Alumna, Epistemology and Learning

MS 1986, PhD 1991
Dean, College of Design, University of Minnesota

Working in the Human Interface Group at Sun Microsystems, Carol developed software interface designs and interaction scenarios. She became a research scientist at an early Media Lab sponsor company — Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL) — as it was starting up in Cambridge. There, Carol led and otherwise participated in teams creating early virtual reality systems and interactive narratives. She also conceived and developed software microwords for learning about principles of geometry, topology, cybernetics, time, and motion. She continued creating learning environments at Media Lab Europe, which she joined as it was starting up in Dublin, Ireland. From there, Carol moved to the University of North Carolina to launch its Center for Design Innovation. Subsequently, she inaugurated the role of vice provost at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Currently, Carol is the Dean of the University of Minnesota's College of Design.
