Khalil Ismail is a designer, engineer, and technologist working at the intersection of software + hardware for cognitive augmentation. He is a graduate student at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art, pursuing a double masters (MS + MA) in Innovation Design Engineering. He is most interested in AI wearables, BCIs, and ambient interfaces. As a researcher at MIT Media Lab, Khalil is collaborating on these areas in a project to passively augment memory during sleep.
About
Khalil has held positions at Apple as an interaction designer for spatial computing, Microsoft as a product manager in AI, Snap Inc. as an AR experience prototyper, and a neurotech startup spun out of the University of Cambridge; the latter during his bachelors (industrial design, mechanical engineering). He has also been a behavioural design researcher at a cognitive science group in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial.
Separate from his work at MIT, Khalil is currently an AI researcher at Harvard University — within the exploratory metaLAB at Harvard BKC/GSD.
In the UK, he has previously won a national innovation award at Buckingham Palace, is a Scholar of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the 1851 Royal Commission, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Khalil was born and raised in Warwickshire, England, and now lives in Kensington & Chelsea, London. In his free time, Khalil is 'writing poetry, building robots, or drinking copious amounts of tea'.
