Steve Pieper

Former Alumnus, Computer Graphics and Animation

 MS 1989; PhD 1991
CEO, Isomics, Inc.

Steve works on medical imaging research in collaboration with hospitals, academia, and industry.  At the Media Lab, he focused on soft tissue simulation for plastic surgery and, since then, he's been doing surgery planning software, quantitative imaging systems, and image guided therapy devices.  Much of his work is released open source and is widely used around the world.

How did your experience at the Lab influence your next step?

I was already deep into computer science and graphics when I came to the Media Lab, but the environment allowed me to experiment and focus on medical applications that have been at the heart of my work ever since.

Experience all of MIT, not just the Media Lab.  MIT courses are challenging and a huge amount of work, but it is important not only for you to develop a broad perspective, but also to be sure your research is firmly grounded in science and engineering.
