Steve is a pioneer in the field of AI pathology: cataloging, diagnosing, and treating digital diseases that cause AI malfunctions. He is CEO and founder of Longreach, which helps companies turn good judgment into measurable assets that compound in value over time.
Steve previously founded two venture-backed startups, and has held senior engineering roles at Apple, Benchling, Overjet, Kyruus, Orange/France Telecom, and VMware. He served as CTO of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, leading bipartisan efforts to digitally transform state government.
Steve was Entrepreneur in Residence at Harvard Medical School, and a visiting scientist in the Dept. of Genetics and the Wyss Institute. His research interests include development of digital immunology to protect AIs from malfunctions and digital diseases, and applications of synthetic biology to solving problems of security, identity, and data integrity. He mentors entrepreneurs at the Harvard iLab.
Steve is an inventor on seven patents, and has received three degrees from MIT including a PhD from the MIT Media Lab for work in artificial intelligence, as an advisee of Marvin Minsky.
How did your experience at the Lab influence your next step?
The Media Lab taught me to get new kinds of answers by asking different kinds of questions. It ruined me for "normal" work, but opened many new doors for one-of-a-kind jobs.
