English Language Proficiency (ELP) Test Requirement for International Students

All international applicants (from countries where English is not the official language) must meet the ELP test requirement.

Applicants must upload a score report or use the following code for electronic submission:

Institution code is 3514, department code is 99 (MIT Graduate Admissions)

Minimum required IELTS score: 7

Minimum required TOEFL score: 100 (internet-based)

Minimum Duolingo English Test (DET) score: 135 

Minimum Cambridge English Qualification: 190 overall score 

The ELP test requirement can be waived by the department under certain circumstances: 

1. Your primary language is English

Primary language is defined as your first language learned and spoken in your family home.

2. Within the last 5 years, you attended an English-speaking university for 3-4 years and attained an undergraduate (or equivalent) degree from that university in one of the following countries:

Australia

Canada

Ireland

New Zealand

United Kingdom

United States

If you meet either of the above requirements for an ELP test waiver you will automatically receive one after entering your information into the online application. You will not need to complete the test scores section.
