IELTS/TOEFL Requirement for International Students

All international applicants (from countries where English is not the official language) must take the IELTS or TOEFL exam.

Applicants must upload a score report or use the following code for electronic submission:

Institution code is 3514, department code is 99 (MIT Graduate Admissions)

Minimum required IELTS score: 7

Minimum required TOEFL score: 94 (internet-based)

IELTS/TOEFL can be waived by the department under certain circumstances:

  1. Applicant’s main language of instruction was English in their primary and secondary schools (i.e., from age 6 through age 18)
  2. Applicant has been residing in the U.S. (or country where English is an official language) for a minimum of three years and has earned a degree from an accredited institution where English is the main language of instruction

If you meet either of the above requirements for an IELTS/TOEFL waiver you will automatically receive one after entering your information into the online application. You will not need to complete the test scores section.
