Dear faculty, staff, and students,

I am pleased to announce that Tod Machover, Muriel R. Cooper Professor of Music and Media at the MIT Media Lab, has been named Faculty Director for the Lab, effective July 1.

In this newly created role, Tod will be responsible for ensuring the research integrity of faculty and researchers in the Media Lab while promoting their flourishing. He will preside over the Lab’s Executive Committee and participate actively in shaping the Lab’s vision and strategy, while providing a centralized connection between the Lab and the Institute.

A world-renowned composer, Tod leads the Lab’s Opera of the Future Group. His visionary approach to applying technology to musical creation and performance has been celebrated through many significant commissions and awards, alongside critical acclaim. His opera Schoenberg in Hollywood opened on May 18 in Los Angeles.

Tod brings an outstanding record of service and commitment to this new position, having joined the Media Lab in 1985, the year of its founding. His deep understanding of the mission, organization, history, and unique strengths of the Lab and its constituent research units makes him ideally suited to guide the faculty and support their wide-ranging, highly innovative work.

In addition to working closely with a new Academic Head for MAS, Tod will partner with a new Executive Director responsible for fundraising, communications, and administration. I am grateful to outgoing Media Lab Director Dava Newman for facilitating a smooth leadership transition.

Please join me in warmly welcoming Tod to his new role and thanking him for his exemplary service to MIT.

Best,
Hashim
