Routes to privacy: traversing U.S. cities under corporate surveillance

Dan Calacci

After collecting the largest dataset of corporate surveillance in the U.S., consisting of every Amazon Ring camera that has posted to the Ring Neighbors app, we've started trying to understand the impact of this surveillance network on cities across the U.S.

To start, we're quantifying the impact that this surveillance has on the freedom to move around cities without being recorded or surveilled. Amazon's network of surveillance is so dense that the routes we take through our cities often have to be changed dramatically in order to avoid being recorded by one of their doorbell cameras.

We're quantifying this phenomenon, developing metrics that capture how difficult it is to move around cities without being surveilled.
