The certified micro-credentials offered through the City Science Lab at the University of Guadalajara aims to enable individuals from informal communities to acquire personal skills and competencies that enhance both their employment opportunities and overall quality of life.
Micro-credentials are digital certifications that validate skills acquired in a short period of time. They are accessible to people of all ages, educational levels, socioeconomic backgrounds and racial and ethnic groups, as well as across all industrial sectors.
Micro-credentials have become an essential tool for professional development in a constantly evolving job market. These digital certifications are transforming the way professionals acquire and demonstrate their knowledge. They offer new opportunities in the labor market and address the need for continuous learning without the commitment of traditional degree programs (agility and flexibility).
The micro-credentials are being developed to be delivered in flexible, hybrid formats, combining in-person workshops with online sessions. This approach aims to increase accessibility and adaptability to diverse learning needs and contexts.
The courses have been divided into two main areas:
- Skills and Competencies – including topics such as electricity, electronic equipment repair, urban gardening, prototyping, and water and energy management.
- Life Improvement – covering subjects such as the fundamentals of AI, applied mathematics for everyday life, daily life skills, circular economy, and robotics.
As the starting point a pilot course was launched at the San Juan de Ocotán Colmena, a community center for social development and civic engagement. This initial course, focused on basic household electricity, received a positive response from the community. Participants expressed strong interest in continuing with a second course on the same topic, as well as in enrolling in other courses that may be offered.
