Papalotes Atmosféricos is a set of wind interfaces that aim to explore kites and wind instruments as a form of low impact data collection instruments as well as performative fieldwork for environmental observation and non cartesian mapmaking.

Papalotes Atmosfericos is part of the project Invisible Interfaces, an ongoing research that has been developed in collaboration with geologists, geophysicists, and meteorologists for the design and fabrication of physical interfaces, the creation of methodologies for experimental data gathering, the implementation of performative fieldwork, and the production of multimedia experimentations in public space to deal with the following research questions:

  • How might interdisciplinary methodologies blend Earth Sciences research processes with collaborative horizontal practices coming from design and contemporary art to enable a better understanding of data, environmental observation technologies, and the scales of planetary phenomena?
  • What sort of new disciplines or fields can be created out of blending scientific observation methodologies and fieldwork with contemporary art practices and design? In such cases, what instruments, existing and newly created, can be used by artists to open and bring these technologies closer to a broader audience?
  • How can contemporary emerging technologies (AR/VR/XR/Ai) be combined with interfaces and experimental methodologies to communicate the continuous effects of climate change in everyday life and bring a new understanding of the organization and control of the environment, our senses, and our relation to non-human and more than human aspects of our milieu?
  • What are the political, social, and environmental implications of site-specific interventions connected to planetary phenomena and how can these interventions produce readings that spark public conversations about the management of the environment and public life?

Given the unique geography and atmospheric conditions in Lanzarote, trade winds are prevalent throughout the island allowing a constant stream of wind from the North that has allowed for agriculture and a manageable climate for its residents. These large scale atmospheric conditions are ideal for wind propelled instruments and devices seen in historical precedents of windmills, wind generators as well as Juguetes de Viento, wind propelled artistic instruments . The aim of Papalotes Atmosféricos is to tap into this history and learn from the usage of wind in the island and propose a low impact way of sensing through the use of wind instruments such as kites, aeolian harps, zoetropes and analog anemometers.

Fieldwork Plan:

The project is divided in the following stages:

1- Research on site regarding wind operated instruments in the area.

2. Arrangement and assemblage of pre fabricated instruments collectively.

3- Testing of instruments in a controlled environment.

4- Deployment of kites and instruments on different sites testing their recording and sensing capabilities.

5- Documentation of sites through different sensing instruments attached to wind instruments.

6- Analysis of data gathered and creation of cartographies, visualizations and soundscapes obtained from fieldwork.

7- Report and multimedia outcome.
