Presentation Title: By Any Lens Necessary: EO Applications for Conflict-Affected Populations and Landscapes

Abstract: Global rates of armed conflict are reaching rates unseen since WWII. We are also living in a supposed "golden age" of AI-enabled satellite technology that promises to provide real-time information on anything, anywhere, anytime. It's clear that satellite-based Earth observation data are uniquely positioned to document the impacts of war for enhanced humanitarian response and legal accountability. But what conflicts have actually been mapped? How are war impacts "seen" in satellite images? And what's stopping us from tracking all impacts of war all the time everywhere? This presentation seeks to answer these questions and chart a path towards providing improved accountability and legal oversight in conflict settings using satellite data.
