Akito van Troyer is a PhD candidate and a research assistant in Prof. Tod Machover’s Opera of the Future group at the MIT Media Lab, where he also completed his master's in 2012 on Hyperaudience, designing performance systems for audience inclusion. Akito focuses his field of study to develop new interfaces for musical expression and human interaction with sound. His research interest lies in the transformation of everyday environments into playful media to facilitate and permeate creative thinking in that environment; this includes computational acoustic design, sonic interaction design, and music signal processing. Born in Portland, Oregon, Akito grew up in Japan and the United States. He is fluent in Japanese and English.
