Tracking points of unrest in informal settlements in real-time. The sensor is a small, handheld device with a button that people can press when they feel unsafe.

Guardian Gadget also has GPS and lighting sensors, which allow us to correlate the data to see what time of day and where people feel most unsafe. A group of women tested the sensor for 10 days, and the results showed clear areas of distress. Then, we held workshops with the community to ensure that the data was correct and to test their assumptions.

We have now developed an application to scale the sensor and be able to collect broader data in different locations.
