Yui Kondo

Yui Kondo is a graduate student at MIT Media Lab. She leads the Algorithmic Mirror project, with a cross-institutional research team of 10+ members (MIT Media Lab, Carnegie Mellon University Human Computer Interaction Institute, Synthetic Society at Oxford Internet Institute, Child-centred AI Design lab at University of Oxford). Her research focuses upon the design of interactive tools for adolescents to assert their agency against algorithmic decisions made about them. Algorithmic Mirror is an interactive visualisation tool that reveals how platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix interpret young people's viewing histories.

Kondo and her team have presented their project "Algorithmic Mirror" at academic venues including ACM SIGCHI and conferences at University of Oxford. Their work emphasizes that young people have the right to understand and challenge the parameters and predictions that algorithms silently assign to them, developing critical self-awareness through this digital mirror.
