Andres Rico, a PhD student in the City Science group at the MIT Media Lab, has been selected as a recipient of the MIT Martin Family Society Fellowship for Sustainability during the 2025-2026 academic year. The fellowship supports graduate students pursuing research that fosters environmental sustainability and public welfare.
Andres’s work focuses on developing community-based sensing systems—collaborative technologies that gather behavioral and environmental data to inform urban decision-making. His current research aims to create accessible, low-power sensor technologies that support better water resource management in informal settlements. By combining technical innovation with social and policy engagement, his goal is to empower communities to drive meaningful environmental action.
